### Double Eagles The USA is a relatively young country, and its first regular issue of gold coins started in 1795. Although most of them have an eagle as a major part of their design, for some reason the $10 piece acquired the name eagle, and the other sizes as double eagles, half eagles, and quarter eagles. The ten dollar gold pieces are therefore known as eagles or gold eagles. Be careful not to confuse them with the modern gold bullion eagles issued since 1986 - both are called eagles! #### Saint Gaudens Mint Marks US double eagles featuring the Saint Gaudens design were minted at the Denver (D mintmark), Philadelphia (no mintmark) and San Francisco (S mintmark) branches of the US Mint. #### Obverse The obverse was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and shows Lady Liberty holding an olive branch and a torch. The inscription reads:LIBERTY 1910 ### Reverse The reverse was also designed by the engraver Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It shows an eagle with rays of sunshine in the background. The inscription reads:UNITED·STATES·OF·AMERICA TWENTY·DOLLARS IN·GOD·WE·TRUST
