The motive was designed by coin designer Joel Iskowitz and features an image of Marie Curie holding a small bottle in her hand and examining it. The chemical symbol "Ra" next to it, which stands for radium, provides information about the contents of the small bottle. Stylized rays can be seen in the background. The reverse displays a triumphant image of a muse stretching her arm towards the sun. Also included in the design is the official coat of arms of Niue, as well as the denomination and year of issue. The scientist and first female Nobel laureate was born Maria Salomea Sklodowska in Warsaw on November 7, 1867, and died in Sancellemoz, France on July 4, 1934. She was distinguished by her great passion for her field of research, her patience, and her tireless efforts. At the age of 28, she married the French teacher and researcher Pierre Curie - this union was to become a successful research duo that coined the term "radioactivity." With her study of the electricity emitted by uranium salts, she laid the foundation for modern nuclear physics and went down in history as one of the most important women of the early 20th century.
