Victoria Young Head Shield Sovereign
Description Victoria Young Head Shield Sovereign coins were produced between 1838 and 1887. The Young Head ran concurrently with two differing designs on the obverse. Both the coins have a portrait of the young Victoria, however from 1838 to 1887 the design on the reverse displayed a heraldic shield. From 1871 to 1887 the Royal Mint revived Benedetto Pistrucci’s earlier design of St. George and the Dragon. Victoria Young Head Shield Sovereign coins are minted in 22ct gold and have been so since the original “modern” design was issued in 1817. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) free. All UK gold and silver bullion coins manufactured by the Royal Mint are legal tender and are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
