Description Victoria Old Head Half Sovereign coins were produced between 1893 and her death in 1901. The Old Head is also referred to as the Widow Head, these coins display a later portrait of Queen Victoria designed by Thomas Brock. The reverse of the coin officially removed the previous design of the shield and adopted Benedetto Pistrucci’s design of St. George and the Dragon, which is still in use today. Victoria Old Head Half Sovereign coins are minted in 22ct gold and have been so since the original “modern” design was issued in 1817. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) free. All UK gold and silver bullion coins manufactured by the Royal Mint are legal tender and are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
