Switzerland 20 Franc
Description The Switzerland/Swiss 20 franc gold coin or Vreneli was first issued in 1897 and ran until 1936 before production ceased. Later coins have been released but all are dated as 1947 and 1949 and are restrikes. Some 1935 coins are also restrikes – these were issued as the Second World War ended to meet demand for gold coinage that the Swiss National Bank had foreseen. Of course, there are actual 1935 coins also in circulation so look out for the small “L” mintmark which denotes the restruck coins. The design of the coins features the symbolic Swiss cross on the reverse of the coin, wreathed in oak branches. The obverse displays the image of Helvetia, the female personification of Switzerland, similar to Britannia. A common Swiss name, Verena, is often diminutized to Vreneli, and serves as the nickname for the Swiss 20 franc. The coins were also made in various other sizes and at different times (10 francs, 100 francs) but the 20 franc was the most commonly seen and used.
