South African 2 Rand
Description South African 2 Rand gold coins were made between 1961 and 1983 by the South African Mint/Rand Refinery. On May 31st 1961, South Africa became a republic, in line with the changeover, the country changed their currency from the pound and changed to the decimalised rand. South African 2 Rand and 1 Rand coins, have the same specifications as the British gold sovereign and half sovereign. The obverse of the coin depicts a portrait of Jan van Riebeeck, the founder of Cape Town. The official motto of South Africa up until 2000 was ‘Unity is Strength’ and the writing on the coin reads ‘EENDRAG MAAK MAG’. The reverse of the coins features the iconic springbok, along with the date of mintage and the face value of the coin 2R. All of our gold coins are verified for authenticity by our experienced team.
