Proof Gold Quarter Ounce – Queen
Description This proof gold quarter ounce coin, dated 2020, pays tribute to one of the most iconic bands of all time, Queen. The Royal Mint commissioned a new series of proof coins that were first released in 2020; the “Music Legends” series celebrating the best of British pop and rock music. Queen pushed many boundaries to create their own unique style. Brian May and Roger Taylor originally performed together in Smile. Mercury later joined and he inspired the band to experiment more. John Deacon joined in 1974, completing one of the biggest bands in music history. Mixing Mercury’s incredible vocal range with classic rock guitar riffs and drum beats, Queen’s songs are as popular today as they were upon release in the 1970s and 1980s. Mercury designed the band’s logo, know as the ‘Queen Crest’. Deacon and Taylor are represented by two lions, *Cancer* the crab sits on top of the ‘Q’ to represent May and the two fairies are for Mercury, who is a *Virgo*. Queen launched back to popularity after the legendary 1985 Band Aid. Mercury’s untimely death in 1991 was met by an outpouring of grief from fans. Today, May and Taylor continue to perform as Queen, now partnered up with Adam Lambert on vocals. The reverse of the coin, designed by Chris Facey, features the band’s name, surrounded by each members instrument. ‘The Bechstein’ grand piano, Brian May’s special red guitar, Taylor’s ‘Ludgwig’ bass drum that is decorated with the Queen crest, Deacon’s ‘Fender Precision Bass’ and Mercury’s signature mic stick. The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint boxes, informative booklet and certificate of authenticity.
