Proof Silver £5 Piedfort – Alfred the Great
Description This proof silver £5 piedfort coin, dated 2021, celebrates Alfred the Great. Following the death of his brother, Alfred acceded to the throne age 22, he immediately seeks to make the country stable again. Britain was divided into smaller kingdoms and was in the grip of Viking raids. Alfred defeated the Viking leader and organised a system of defensive troop sites encircling Wessex, to stop any further Viking attacks. Alfred learned to read and recruited scholars to his court to help revive learning. Works were translated from Latin into Old English, in order for them to be more accessible. Alfred died in 899 and displayed many of the qualities we would expect to see from our modern monarchy. The reverse of the coin is inspired directly by the ‘Alfred Jewel’, a piece of rock crystal set over gold enamelling, from his reign. The medieval ‘punch’ lettering reflects the style of the period. The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint boxes, informative booklet and certificate of authenticity. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) Free. All UK gold and silver bullion coins manufactured by the Royal Mint are legal tender and are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
