Proof Gold Two Ounce – The Waterloo Medal – Victory 2025
Description This proof gold two ounce coin, dated 2025, is part of the Royal Mint’s Great Engravers Collection. Using original tooling used by Pistrucci, now held in the Royal Mint Museum, the Waterloo Medal has been created after it was never physically struck. Benedetto Pistrucci’s talent for engraving blossomed from a young age. He arrived in England in January 1815, following a recommendation to pursue work in London. He was soon employed upon his arrival and was introduced to William Wellesley Pole, who at the time was Master of the Mint, marking the beginning of Pistrucci’s association with the Royal Mint. In 1816, to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo, The Royal Mint invited Pistrucci to produce designs. In 1848 Pistrucci said that very little remained to be done on the medal. The dies were finally completed the following year, however they were so large that they were unsuitable for striking. After extensive delays, the intended recipients of the medals, the European Heads of State, had all passed away by 1852. The reverse of the coin reinterprets the Battle of the Giants – 19 giants representing the 19 years of war. The Battle of Waterloo brought the Napoleonic Wars to an end and the design focuses on the Duke of Wellington and General Blücher. The obverse of the coin features the portrait of His Majesty King Charles III. This coin is from a limited edition of just 195. The coin comes in original Royal Mint presentation packaging, informative booklet and certificate of authenticity. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) Free and VAT free.
