Proof Gold Quarter Ounce – The Land Down Under – Rock Fishing
Description This proof gold quarter ounce coin, dated 2014, is from the Perth Mint’s Land Down Under series. This coin focuses on Rock Fishing, one of the most dangerous sports in Australia, due to their isolated locations, uneven and slippery surfaces and the unpredictable conditions of the ocean. Despite reports of fisherman being swept to their death, it remains a very popular activity across the country. Many different species of fish are attracted to the waters around the rocks and reef, where they seek protection and also get the chance to feed on algae. As a result many fishermen populate these areas as they are provided with the opportunity to catch many species of fish, which would only be accessible to boat fishermen. The reverse of the coin features a fisherman and his son fishing from a rock and the inscription reads ‘THE LAND DOWN UNDER ROCK FISHING’. The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, along with the weight and fineness are featured. The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule within a latex, Australia shaped display case, outer box and certificate of authenticity. The Perth Mint released no more than 1000 of these coins.
