Description This Proof Gold Four Coin Sovereign Set, dated 2020, is made up of a Double sovereign (£2), full sovereign, half sovereign and a quarter sovereign. 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of the death of George III, who was the first monarch to appear on the modern sovereign. This edition features a special mint mark, his royal cypher. The letter ‘R’ is added to a monarch’s first initial and is an abbreviation of ‘Rex’ or ‘Regina’, which is Latin for King or Queen. In 1817 as part of a reform of coinage, the modern sovereign was introduced, with Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic portrayal of St. George slaying the dragon. The initials ‘BP’ can be found on the base under the hoof of the horse. The obverse of the coins in this 2020 four coin collection, feature Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
