Proof Gold Five Coin Sovereign Set 2012
Description This Proof Gold Five Coin Sovereign Set, dated 2012, consists of a Quintuple sovereign (£5), Double Sovereign (£2) and a full, half and quarter sovereign. Sovereigns were first struck in 1489 and is one of Britain’s most famous coins. In 1817 as part of a reform of coinage, the modern sovereign was introduced, with Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic portrayal of St. George slaying the dragon. However this year features a new portrayal of St. George and the Dragon. The Royal Mint held a competition to find a one-time reverse design in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Paul Day explained that he focused on St George being a medieval knight of Arthurian legend rather than a classical hero and the dragon was represented with a more threatening attitude and size. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coins in the 2012 five coin set, come in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint box and certificate of authenticity. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) free. All UK gold and silver bullion coins manufactured by the Royal Mint are legal tender and are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
