Proof Gold 50p – Wallace and Gromit
Description This proof gold 50p, dated 2019, celebrates 30 years of Wallace and Gromit. The coin was designed by their creator Nick Park, who chose the stop motion process. After seven years, ‘A Grand Day Out with Wallace and Gromit’ screened at the Bristol Animation Festival on 4th November 1989. Three decades on from the screening, Wallace and Gromit has had major success, such as five films, won Academy Awards and featured in ads, apps and stamps. Wallace is an inventor who loves Wensleydale cheese, crackers and tea. He shares a house with Gromit, his loyal companion and friend, on 62 West Wallaby Street, where many of their adventures and ideas begin. In ‘A Grand Day Out’ they build a rocket ship. The reverse of the coin features the iconic duo in the porthole of their rocket, with the Latin inscription ‘CASEUS PRAESTANS’ above, which translates as ‘CRACKING CHEESE’. The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
