Proof Gold 50p Two Coin Set – D-Day & Single European Market
Description This proof gold 50p two coin set, features two designs to commemorate significant events in European History. Fifty years separate the two occasions, however they both represent a free, yet united Europe. The first 50p, dated 1994, marks the 50th anniversary of D-Day. In the spring of 1944, more than three million troops had assembled in Southern England in preparation for the Normandy Landings. The date and location of the invasion was one of the best kept secrets of the war and then became the ‘longest’ day that will forever be known as D-Day. By September most of France was free and within a year, most of Europe. The reverse of the coin features the Allied invasion force, filling the sea and sky, on the historic day. The second 50p is dated 1992-1993 and marks 25 years since the UK’s entrance into the European Economic Community. The coin features Mary Milner Dickens design, a table top viewed from above, around the table are twelve chairs. On top of the table are also 12 stars, which represents the twelve members of the EU, these stars are linked with lines to represent the links of commerce and trade. They are placed in the geographic positions of the capital cities. In honour of the presidency, the chair at the head of the table is marked ‘UK’. The obverse of both coins feature Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Each coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with an original Royal Mint box and combined certificate of authenticity and informative booklet.
