Great Britain, 1847 Gothic Crown in pure silver - The 1847 gothic crown is often regarded as Britain’s most beautiful coin. Large, ornate, and visually commanding, it has long been one of the great classics of British numismatics. The issue exists in several varieties, including lettered-edge and plain-edge examples, pieces struck in sterling silver and pure silver, and several recognised die varieties. The present coin is one of the rarer forms: a pure silver, plain-edge example with the M in DOM struck over an inverted M. Although not a technically high-grade example for the wider issue, it is the equal-second finest PCGS-graded example for this specific variety (5/26), underscoring its rarity. It is also highly appealing in hand, with generally clean fields, a clear effigy, original steel-grey tone, and a sharp strike. For the serious gothic crown collector, or the collector seeking one of the world’s most celebrated coin designs, this is a significant and difficult-to-replace acquisition.
