### **$20 Gold Double Eagle Liberty Head - Extra Fine XF (Random Year)** The California Gold Rush in 1849 opened a flood gate for gold. The abundance of gold allowed the United States Government to take a historic and important decision that is to mint gold coins with higher denomination. Till that time, $10 Gold Eagle was the highest denomination used in trade, which made huge transactions cumbersome. So the Congress came up with double the higher denomination and authorized US Mint to strike $20 Gold Double Eagle coins. After passing the Gold Dollar Bill in 1849, US Mint first minted two pattern coins of $20 Double Eagle of which one rests in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The whereabouts of the second pattern coin is unknown so far. In 1850, US Mint began production of these coins for commerce. Once it was released, it became an instant success with the public and was used efficiently by banks and merchants alike. It led to easier transactions of huge amounts. Chief Engraver James B. Longacre was given the responsibility of designs for the coin, which are elegant and have high collectible value.
