Morgan is modeled after an American woman named Anna Willess Williams. George Morgan opted to use her likeness for Lady Liberty’s profile instead of the traditional neoclassical bust portrait. Minted from 1878 until 1904, the Morgan Dollars’ production ceased due to the depletion of the US silver reserve. In 1918, the passage of the Pittman Act authorized the melting of millions of Silver Dollars. Following that event, the US Mint resumed the mintage of Silver Morgan Dollars in 1921. The Morgan Dollar design was replaced by the Peace Dollar design later that same year, making 1921 the final year Morgan Dollars were minted. The obverse of the coin shows Lady Liberty’s left-facing profile designed by George T. Morgan, along with the year of mintage and the phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM. Thirteen stars representing the original 13 colonies encircle the bottom of the coin. The reverse features the majestic American Eagle with its outstretched wings. It holds an olive branch and arrows in its talons.
