Australian half sovereigns are famous for their low mintages. This has made them highly collectable, even in lower grades. Photographed above is a 1904-P half sovereign in PCGS AU58, and like all Edward VII Perth half sovereigns, it is scarce. With a low mintage of just 60,000 pieces, very few have survived the last century unscathed, with many coins in very worn condition or even damaged. There are only two examples in Mint State and one in AU58+ certified by PCGS (9/19). The example from the famed [Quartermaster Collection was graded PCGS AU58](https://www.pcgs.com/cert/30730066 "1904P half sovereign"), so the coin on offer here is in good company. In hand, the piece is in original condition, and has not been dipped or cleaned. There is residual lustre in the legends and devices, and lots of beard on Edward VII leftover after what must have been only a very short time in circulation. If you’re chasing a high-grade Perth half sovereign but don’t want to fork out five figures for one in MS62, this is your coin. Professional Coin Grading Service is the global leader in coin authentication and grading. With over 60 million coins graded and counting, PCGS is trusted by collectors, dealers, and investors to certify authenticity, protect value, and elevate market confidence. This is a direct conversion of the 70-point PCGS grade to a 10-point scale, intended to present the grade in a more intuitive format for newer collectors. It is not our personal opinion or an attempt at regrading the coin to a different standard.
