The 1849 California Gold Rush made the United States a wealthy country which could now think of introducing a higher denomination to its coinage due to the abundance of gold. The highest denomination in circulation till that point was $10 Eagle. The government planned to add a $20 denomination to ease larger transactions in banks and with merchants. Since it was double the amount of $10 Eagle, it got its name as $20 Double Eagle. Liberty Head designed by James B. Longacre adorned the obverse of this coin and a heraldic eagle on the reverse. This design would remain the same with a few minor changes for almost 60 years before it gets a new lease of life with President Theodore Roosevelt coming into power. President Roosevelt personally felt that the coins of the 19th century which had not seen many changes so far were hideous and that the American coins needed to be beautified immediately as he felt the coins were the most palpable representation of a country. He wanted the designs to show off the country’s freedom of thought and free spirit. He commissioned his good friend and a renowned sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create fresh new designs for 5 coins of America which were the $20 Double Eagle, $10 Eagle, $5 Half Eagle, $2.5 Quarter Eagle, and the Cent. Both Theodore Roosevelt and Saint-Gaudens were admirers of high relief ancient coins of Greece. They felt a high relief design for the American coins would be a spectacular achievement compared to their earlier counterparts from the 19th century. Saint-Gaudens had experimented with several designs of Liberty for the obverse including bust portraits and full-body versions and for the reverse he had tried standing eagle as well as eagle in flight. The president chose the full-body version of Lady Liberty for the obverse of $20 Eagle with the eagle in flight design for the reverse. He made a high relief model of Lady Liberty holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand striding forward confidently with her hair and robe flowing beautifully against the wind. On the background are the rising sun and the U.S. Capitol building. Which was a modification from Gaudens Fame from Sherman’s Monument situated at Central Park in New York City. The reverse featured a majestic eagle in flight on a background of the rising sun. The mint struck the ultrahigh relief of this coin in 1907 which also had the denomination in Roman numerals. The coin took seven strikes to get the high relief which damaged the dies just after making 18 to 20 coins, which resulted in a drastic reduction in production. Upon release, it was found that the coins also could not stack well and since people were unfamiliar with the Roman numerals, it was considered unfit for commerce. The coins also did not have the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” which was added in the later issues. Since Gaudens lost his life to cancer before finishing the low reliefs for the coins, Charles E. Barber had to cut down the ultrahigh design along with the removal of the Roman numerals and addition of Arabic numerals and also the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The coin was welcomed with rave reviews and was liked by one and all and earned the position of the most beautiful coin in American history. The coin was minted from 1907-1933. Bullion Exchanges is pleased to offer you these **$20 Gold Double Eagle Saint Gaudens** at one of the most competitive prices in the industry.
