Although Saint-Gaudens was given the responsibility of providing designs for four denominations the [Double Eagle](file:///20-gold-double-eagle-liberty-type-almost-uncirculated-au-random-year), Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle, Augustus Saint-Gaudens could only complete the designs for the first two coins before his untimely death in August 1907. While the mint officials had assumed that a scaled-down image of the design of Double Eagle will go on the smaller two denominations, a whole new concept was brewing at the President’s end. A good friend of President Theodore Roosevelt, Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow had been working with a sculptor from Boston, Bela Lyon Pratt who had come up with a new concept for coins. According to this design the coin had incused or sunken designs that provided high relief, were easy to stack, and also would protect the design from any damage. He wrote about this to the president in a letter. As this concept seemed practical for commerce accompanied by artistic values, the president showed interest in this idea. Pratt got down to work and created a design based on the Saint-Gaudens’ Gold Eagle’s obverse design of Lady Liberty with a headdress. Instead of making a female face, Pratt chose to make a model of a male Native American wearing headdress using a photo of an unknown Native American person from his collection of photos. Theodore Roosevelt approved the design and production of the coins began in 1908. The obverse of the coin featured a leftward facing portrait of a realisticlooking Native American wearing a headdress. The date, 13 stars, and the motto “LIBERTY” form a circle around this central image. The reverse features a majestic bald eagle perched on a bunch of arrows and holding an olive branch in its talon to depict preparedness and peace. Inscriptions: "United States of America", "E Pluribus Unum", "In God We Trust" and the denomination “2 1⁄2 Dollars.” Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt. The [**Gold Eagle Indian Head coin**](file:///buy-gold/us-gold-coins/pre-1933/indian-head) went through a lot of criticism upon its release as people were unfamiliar with the new concept of sunken design. There were doubts that the coin could be easily counterfeited, some felt the coin was not beautiful, a numismatist Samuel Chapman felt that the coins sunken design can accumulate dirt and germs and cause health issues. The Quarter Eagles were struck from 1908 to 1929 in total. First, it was struck from 1908 to 1915, and then the production was paused for a decade. The production began again in 1925 and went on till 1929. These coins are one of the smallest series in the U.S. Coinage history and have only 15 different date and mint combinations out of which 12 issues are from Philadelphia and the remaining 3 issues are from Denver. The coin has stood the test of time and has emerged victorious as one of the most soughtafter coins by collectors as well as investors. The novel minting process, its age, rarity, and its magnitude all add to its investment and collectible appeal. **Bullion Exchanges** is pleased to offer you Gold Quarter Eagle Indian Head coins at one of the most competitive prices in the industry.
