The Snowman author, Raymond Briggs, is one of Britain’s best known illustrators. The classic story features a magical adventure of a little boy building a snowman and when the clock strikes midnight, his creation comes to life. Briggs lived in Sussex and it features heavily in the story, such as the boy and Snowman flying over Brighton, passing the Royal Pavilion and Palace Pier. After the new friends part with a hug, the boy wakes to find the snowman has melted. The book sold well on release, however it was Channel 4’s 1978 adaptation that turned it into a global phenomenon. Although the original book wasn’t really about Christmas, The Snowman has become a much-loved Christmas favourite. The book and film later turned into an acclaimed musical, video game and touring exhibition. The Royal Mint’s Snowman coin has been released annually since 2018. The reverse of the coin, designed by Robin Shaw, features the boy and the Snowman sharing a hug, whilst surrounded by snowfall. The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
