Proof Gold 50p – Sherlock Holmes
Description This proof 50p gold coin, dated 2019, was struck in celebration of Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle, born on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, had a passion for books and storytelling from an early age. After serving as a medic for the British troops, he knew that writing was his destiny. In March 1886 he wrote the novel ‘A Study in Scarlet’ and as a result, he rose to fame. This was the first introduction to Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, where they resided at 221b Baker Street. The adventures of Sherlock and his assistant, resulted in 60 stories. The world famous detective has sparked inspiration for films, TV series, plays and video games. The designer, Stephen Raw, has been a fan of Sherlock Holmes since childhood. The reverse of the coin features a portrait of Sherlock Holmes, surrounded by some of his most popular adventures. The inscription is purposely in a smaller font, the idea is that the owner’s ‘inner detective’ will use a magnifying glass to ‘solve the mystery of the text’. The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint boxes, certificate of authenticity and informative booklet.
