Proof Gold 50p – Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games
Description This proof gold 50p, dated 2014, celebrates The XX Commonwealth Games. First starting in 1930 and formerly known as the British Empire Games, the games became modernised in 1978 and became the Commonwealth Games. Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II often opened and closed the games and since 1958 the games featured ‘The Queen’s Baton Relay’. Traditionally from Buckingham Palace, she entrusts a baton to an honorary relay runner, containing her ‘message to athletes’. The baton travels around the Commonwealth nations and is then returned at the Opening Ceremony and her message is read aloud. For the 2014 Games in Glasgow, Scotland, the baton was made there and designed to represent the history, culture and spirit of Glasgow. Thousands of athletes compete in 17 sports across 11 days, Para-sports are also integrated under their Equality goal, making a total of 261 medal events. The reverse of the coin incorporates the Saltire, along with a cyclist and runner to sum up the sporting spirits of the games. The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Elizabeth II.
