Proof Gold £5 Memorial Crown – The Queen Mother
Description This proof gold £5 crown, was issued as a memorial to the Queen Mother. Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was born on 4th August 1900 and married Prince Albert, Duke of York. On the abdication of his brother, he succeeded to the throne as King George VI, after he took one of his middle names. They had two children, Elizabeth II and Margaret Rose. On the death of her husband, she became Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. This title is used for a queen who is both the widow of a deceased monarch and the mother of the current sovereign. The Queen Mother sadly passed away on the 30th March 2002, where she lay in state for four days at Westminster Hall. The coffin was then conveyed to the Abbey where the bell chimed 101 times, to mark each year of her life. She was then buried alongside George VI and Margaret Rose at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. The reverse of the coin features The Queen Mother’s portrait who is surrounded by a delicate wreath. The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with the official Royal Mint boxes, informative booklet and certificate of authenticity. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) free.
