Description This proof gold £5 crown, dated 2001, marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria and celebrates a dynamic, Victorian era in British history. In 1851, founded by Prince Albert, The Great Exhibition took place. People could have displays of art, inventions and precious jewels, it was a place for the best investors and scientists to show off. The Great Exhibition was in Hyde Park and a huge glass and iron building, called the Crystal Palace, was built especially for the Exhibition. Six million people visited in six months and people travelled from all over Britain on the new railway lines. Child labour was abolished and free education and public libraries were provided. By the time of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 1887, the Victorians were overcoming the plague of epidemics. News now came in a matter of minutes, rather than weeks and the modern newspaper was established after major developments in printing technology. The reverse of the coin features the iron and glass frame of the beautiful Crystal Palace. A young portrait of Victoria as the focus, whilst the railway lines form a V, as a reminder of the railway expansion in the Victorian era. The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint box, certificate of authenticity and informative booklet. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) free. All UK gold and silver bullion coins manufactured by the Royal Mint are legal tender and are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
