Proof Gold £5 Crown – The Battle of Trafalgar 2005
Description This proof gold £5 crown, dated 2005, marks the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. The Battle of Trafalgar took place on 21 October 1805 and was named this due to Cape Trafalgar being the nearest point of land. Many years of sea battles occurred with France and Spain, which ended with British victory and therefore known to be one of the most decisive battles ever fought at sea. The British fleet was commanded by [Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson.](https://www.atsbullion.com/product/proof-gold-5-crown-horatio-nelson-2005/)HMS *Victory* was Lord Nelson’s flagship in his victory and not one of his thirty-three ships were lost. HMS *Temeraire* went into action immediately behind *Victory* and during the battle came to the rescue of *Victory.* Inspired by a painting, the reverse of the coin features the two British ships in convoy, during a sea battle, through the view of a telescope. The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with the official Royal Mint boxes, informative booklet and certificate of authenticity. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) free.
