Proof Gold £5 Crown – Horatio Nelson 2005
Description This proof gold £5 crown, marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Horatio Nelson. Britain’s most famous sailor was aged twelve when he began his naval career aboard *HMS Raisonnable.* During his first years at sea, he learned many skills of navy life, gaining experience of different vessels and environments. He rose through the ranks after passing his lieutenant’s exam and gained the position of Post Captain when he was twenty. During the Battle of Trafalgar, Nelson suffered a fatal injury, a gunshot wound to his chest and spine, resulting in a spinal cord injury, which ultimately led to his death. He survived long enough to learn his fleet were victorious. The reverse of the coin features a portrait of Nelson in the uniform of Vice Admiral and the obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The edge inscription reads ‘ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY’. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with an original Royal Mint box, informative booklet and certificate of authenticity.
