Proof Gold £5 – 75th Anniversary of the End of WW2 – Making Peace
Description This proof gold £5, dated 2020, commemorates the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. After 6 years of struggle and sacrifice, on 8th May 1945 the Allies accepted Germany’s surrender, when people took to the streets to celebrate the end of the Second World War in Europe. This was one of the greatest moments in British history, known as VE day. Whilst the war was over in Europe, Japan still had to be defeated and many British soldiers were re-deployed to the Far East and Pacific. Churchill lead Britain to victory and helped the nation during its darkest hour, but he was less suited to peacetime politics and Clement Attlee’s Labour party saw him resign. US President Truman, targeted Hiroshima and deployed the ‘Little Boy’ bomb, causing destruction and more than 100,000 deaths. On the 14 August 1945, the Prime Minister announced the news of Japan’s surrender and the end of the Second World War. There was a two-day national holiday which began with Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day). As a result, 51 countries came together to found the United Nations, an organisation committed to maintaining international peace. The reverse of the coin features a typographic intersection between the words ‘WAR’ and ‘PEACE’. The design is made to mirror stone inscriptions often found on war memorials, the design shows chiselled lettering on clay, with real life textures of natural ripples. ‘PEACE’ dominates the intersection to mark it’s importance that the war has passed and a new era of peace is now amongst us. The edge inscription reads ‘THROUGH COURACE AND ENDURANCE’. The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint boxes, informative booklet and certificate of authenticity. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) and VAT free.
