Proof Gold £5 – 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo 2015
Description This proof gold £5 coin, dated 2015, marks the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The Napoleonic Wars were a series of conflicts that took place between 1799 and 1815 between France and a number of European alliances. The Battle of Waterloo, fought on 18 June 1815, was one of the most decisive battles in history. It was the final battle of the Napoleonic Wars after 20 years of conflict. It was fought between an Anglo-Allied force, led by the Duke of Wellington and a French Army with Napoleon. Napoleon desired for a European Empire and Wellington sought to defend that of Britain. The battle was won and Napoleon was imprisoned. The reverse of the coin takes inspiration from existing artwork, *The Meeting of Wellington and Blucher after the Battle of Waterloo.* The painting depicts General Blücher for Prussia and Wellington shaking hands on horse back and features cannons, that were used in combat. The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule with the official Royal Mint boxes, informative booklet and certificate of authenticity. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) free. All UK gold and silver bullion coins manufactured by the Royal Mint are legal tender and are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
