Proof Gold £2 – The End of WWII – 60th Anniversary
Description This proof gold £2, dated 1945-2005, marks the 60th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War. In 1945, the Prime Minister announced the news of Japan’s surrender and the end of WWII. Following the broadcast, Britain exploded into a state of joy. Parties with bonfires and fireworks took place across the country and many servicemen and women linked arms with civilians to march through the streets. Partygoers invaded Central London dancing and singing and continued into the early hours of the morning. 15th and 16th August 1945 were declared as national holidays, to mark the return of peace to the world. The reverse of the coin features a representation of the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral bathed in floodlight. The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The edge inscription reads ‘IN VICTORY MAGNANIMITY IN PEACE GOODWILL’ which is taken from the ‘moral’ that prefaces Churchill’s history of WWII. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with a combined informative booklet and certificate of authenticity and original Royal Mint boxes. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) Free and VAT free. All UK gold and silver bullion coins manufactured by the Royal Mint are legal tender and are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
