Proof Gold £2 – Robert Burns
Description This proof gold £2 coin, dated 2009, marks the 250th Anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, one of Scotland’s favourite sons. Robert was born in Ayrshire in 1759, in a cottage built by his struggling, farmer father. He wrote a song in 1784 when he fell in love with Jean Armour, who became his wife. He did however have many love affairs, it was love that inspired him with his work and he remembered them all affectionally. His first collection of poems were released in 1786 and he was shot to fame. He sadly passed in 1796, but he left a legacy of songs and poems that continued to touch the minds and hearts of people over the world. His most famous work ‘Auld Lang Syne’, a song that is sung on New Year’s Eve and is a celebration of friendship. This inspired the reverse design, which features the written inscription ‘We’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne’. Inscription around the edge of the coin reads ‘SHOULD AULD ACQUAINTACE BE FORGOT’. The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint boxes and certificate of authenticity. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) Free and VAT free.
