Proof Gold £2 – Mary Rose
Description This proof gold £2 coin, dated 2011, marks the 500th anniversary of the launch of King Henry VIII’s ship, The Mary Rose. To build a strong defence over attacks from French ships, King Henry VIII invested heavily in the Navy and the Mary Rose became the pride of the Royal Navy. The Mary Rose was rebuilt in 1528 and 1536, adding an extra deck and her weight increased. She was however overloaded and capsized and sunk when they advanced to battle. In 1971 she was rediscovered along with many of the crew’s possessions. The whole starboard side has been preserved in silt. As an insight to Tudor life, the Mary Rose is now on display at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The reverse of the coin features a highly detailed image of the Mary Rose and the obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Inscription around the edge of the coin reads ‘YOUR NOBLEST SHIPPE 1511’. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint boxes and certificate of authenticity.
