Proof Gold £2 – Marconi 2001
Description This proof gold £2, also known as a double sovereign, is dated 2001 and celebrates the 100th anniversary of Marconi’s first wireless transmission across the Atlantic. Guglielmo Marconi, born in Italy 1874, is often referred to as the father of wireless, due to his development of radio and wireless communication. In 1897 he set up the Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company and in 1898 the company opened the world’s first wireless factory in Chelmsford, Essex. In 1901, Marconi made the first successful wireless message across the Atlantic Ocean, from Cornwall to Newfoundland. In 1909 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun, in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy. The reverse design of the coin was voted for by the public and it features wireless waves, in the centre and outer border. A spark of electricity links the zeros of the date, generating a series of three dots, which is the Morse code for ‘S’ and was the original signal transmitted in 1901. The edge inscription reads ‘WIRELESS BRIDGES THE ATLANTIC ··· MARCONI 1901’. The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint box and certificate of authenticity. 2500 of these coins were issued.
