Description This proof gold £2 coin, dated 2021, celebrates the life and work of H.G. Wells. Herbert George Wells was born in Bromley on 21 September 1866. He and his family endured relative poverty during his childhood. When he was 7, he suffered a broken leg and was left bedridden. During this time, he became an eager reader and by the age of 18 he was well-read. He received a scholarship at the Normal School of Science, where he studied biology and subsequently gained a degree in zoology from London University. H.G. Wells then became a science teacher and his background in biology led to his first publication ‘Text-book of Biology’. He then went on to release ‘The Time Machine’ when he rose to fame. His esteemed narratives became very popular within the science fiction (sci-fi) world. Ideas such as space travel, genetic engineering and the atomic bomb. He is best known for ‘The Father of Science Fiction’. Many of his novels have since been adapted onto the big screen. The reverse of the coin, designed by Chris Costello, incorporates three story ideas without being too cluttered. A Martian machine from ‘The War of the Worlds’, ‘The Invisible Man’ and a surrounding clock taking inspiration from ‘The Time Machine’. The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint boxes, informative booklet and certificate of authenticity. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) Free and VAT free. All UK gold and silver bullion coins manufactured by the Royal Mint are legal tender and are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
