Proof Gold £2 – Brunel
Description This proof gold £2, dated 2006, celebrates Brunel and his achievements. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, one of Britain’s greatest engineers, was born on 9 April 1806 and was the only son of engineer Marc Isambard Brunel. Isambard studied in Paris, upon his return to England in 1823, he worked with his father on the of the Thames Tunnel. In 1828 he entered a competition, the winner would design a bridge across the Avon Gorge, his design won, but it was not completed until 1864, 5 years after his death, due to financial problems. In 1833, he was appointed chief engineer to the new Great Western Railway. His visions then resulted in the construction of the first transatlantic steamship, the PS Great Western, her maiden voyage was to New York in 1838. Following huge success, Brunel was commissioned to build a sister ship, the first iron steamship with a screw propeller, The SS Great Britain. In 1852 his work on his third steamship begun, SS Great Eastern, however after facing many engineering problems his health was affected and contributed to his death. The reverse of the coin features Paddington Station’s famous arched roof, Brunel designed these arches during his time as chief Engineer for GWR. The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Inscription around the edge of the coin reads ‘SO MANY IRONS IN THE FIRE’. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint and combined certificate of authenticity and informative booklet.
