Proof Gold £2 – 75th Anniversary of D-Day 2019
Description This proof gold £2 coin, dated 2019, marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day, honouring the courage of those who fought and sadly died. On the 6th June 1944, more than three million troops had assembled in Southern England in preparation for the Normandy Landings. The date and location of the invasion was one of the best kept secrets of the war and then became the ‘longest’ day that will forever be known as D-Day. By September most of France was free and within a year, most of Europe. Reverse designer, Stephen Taylor, researched artwork and military maps from the time period for inspiration. The land is positioned at the bottom of the coin and Stephen started to build up the scale of the operation with arrows and code names for each of the beaches. Spirit of international cooperation is represented through the fonts, which was inspired by markings on British, Canadian and US landing craft. The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Edge inscription reads ‘THE LONGEST DAY’. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint boxes, informative booklet and certificate of authenticity. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) Free and VAT free. All UK gold and silver bullion coins manufactured by the Royal Mint are legal tender and are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
