Proof Gold £2 – 350th Anniversary of Samuel Pepys’ Last Diary Entry
Description This proof gold £2 coin, dated 2019, marks the 350th Anniversary of Samuel Pepys’ Last Diary Entry. Samuel Pepys’ diary starts in 1660 and gives us an insight into his life and the nation of Britain across nine years. Some of the notable entries include the beginning of the Great Plague in London, this began in spring 1665 and lasted until summer 1666 and took the lives of around 100,000 people. In September 1666, the Great Fire of London started, spanning across four days and nights. Pepys made his last diary entry on 31 May 1669. The inscription on the edge of the coin reads ‘the good God prepare me’, which was included in the last entry after he feared he was losing his sight. The reverse of the coin features Pepys’ shorthand diary and quill. The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with an informative booklet, certificate of authenticity and original Royal Mint boxes.
