Proof Gold £2 – 1986
Description This proof gold £2, also known as a double sovereign, is dated 1986. In 1817 as part of a reform of coinage, the modern sovereign was introduced, with Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic portrayal of St. George slaying the dragon. This was the first year that there was a different design on the £2 coin rather than the iconic St. George and Dragon. This £2 coin commemorates the eighth Commonwealth Games. In 1986, Edinburgh became the first city to host the Commonwealth games twice, however most people often remember this for the large political boycott. This was a result of the Thatcher Government’s attitude towards British sporting links with apartheid-era South Africa. The Games were boycotted by 32 of the 59 Commonwealth nations. The reverse of the coin features a Scottish Thistle and laurel wreath, superimposed on the St Andrew’s Cross. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint box and certificate of authenticity. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) Free and VAT free. All UK gold and silver bullion coins manufactured by the Royal Mint are legal tender and are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
