Description This proof £5 gold coin, dated 2021, honours a life of dedicated service by His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. As a young prince, he was exiled from Greece and found a new home in the UK. In 1939 he joined the Royal Navy, studied hard and rose through the ranks, however his naval career came to an end following the death of his father-in-law. As a patron or president of more than 750 different organisations, Philip devoted much of his time to his role. In 1956 the ‘Duke of Edinburgh’s Award’ was introduced, benefitting millions of young people, which remains one of his greatest legacy’s. He retired from official duties in 2017 and the nation mourned his passing in 2021. The coin is marked 1921-2021. The reverse of the coin features a portrait of Prince Philip, which he personally approved in 2008, along with the inscription ‘HRH THE PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH, 1921 2021’. The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule along with original Royal Mint boxes and certificate of authenticity and informative booklet. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) free. All UK gold and silver bullion coins manufactured by the Royal Mint are legal tender and are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
