Proof Gold £5 – Henry VIII
Description This proof £5 gold coin, dated 2009, marks the 500th anniversary of the accession of Henry VIII. Henry VIII reigned for almost four decades and his greatest legacy is perhaps the establishment of the Royal Navy. The reverse of the coin is inspired by a standing portrait by Hans Holbein. Henry is shown standing before roses styled in carvings and tapestries of the period. He is surrounded within a petal-shaped device, often used to frame portraits on medieval coins. Henricus Rex (HR) cipher is taken from an engraved gun barrel of the time. The design, by John Bergdahl, is enclosed within a rope border, to represent the Royal Navy. The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The £5 coin comes in a plastic capsule with the official Royal Mint boxes and certificate of authenticity. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) free. All UK gold and silver bullion coins manufactured by the Royal Mint are legal tender and are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
