Proof Gold £5 Crown- 90th Birthday of the Queen Mother
Description This Proof gold £5 crown marks the 90th Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon, born on 4th August 1990, married Prince Albert (George VI), the second son of King George V. In 1936, George VI suddenly became king when his older brother, Edward VIII abdicated the throne. Elizabeth then became Queen Consort and reigned from December 1936 to February 1952. Following the death of her husband, she took on the official title of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, to avoid confusion with her daughter Queen Elizabeth II. She passed away on March 2002 at the Royal Lodge Windsor, at the age of 101. At the time of her death, she was the longest-living member of the British royal family. The reverse of the coin features a crowned ‘E’ cypher, duplicated and interlaced, to represent the two Elizabeths. The cypher is surrounded by national flower emblems, a rose and thistle. ‘1900 1990’ and ‘Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’ is inscribed around the edge. The obverse features Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, with original Royal Mint box and certificate of authenticity.
