Proof Gold £2 – Florence Nightingale
Description This proof gold £2 coin, dated 2010, commemorates Florence Nightingale and her contribution to nursing. Florence Nightingale was born in Italy in 1820 and named after the city of her birth. Florence began nurse training in Germany and after three months started working at a hospital in London’s Harley Street. In 1860 she published her Notes on Nursing and established the ‘Nightingale Training School for Nurses’ at St. Thomas’ Hospital. During her life, she passionately campaigned to improve health standards and was awarded the ‘Royal Red Cross’ and the ‘Order of Merit’. Florence sadly passed away on 13 August 1910. Celebrating nursing in general, the reverse of the coin features a depiction of a pulse being taken and symbolic rays of light in the background. The rays of light take inspiration from when she tended the wounded at night, during the Crimean War and as a result was known as ‘The Lady with the Lamp’. The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth. Inscription around the edge of the coin reads ‘150 YEARS OF NURSING’. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint boxes and certificate of authenticity. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) Free and VAT free.
