Proof Gold £2 – Charles Darwin
Description This proof gold £2 coin, dated 2009, marks the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Charles Darwin. Charles Darwin, born in 1809, became deeply interested in natural history. In 1831 he became a naturalist aboard HMS Beagle to survey the southern Coast of South America. On his almost five year travel, he studied and collected a large number of specimens. Upon his return to Britain, he had aroused intense interest within the scientific world with his notes and journals. After extensive research, by 1844 he worked out the essentials of his evolutionary theory. The reverse of the coin reflects his theory of evolution, with a portrait of Darwin and a chimpanzee. The designer Suzie Zamit felt that featuring the two was the most recognisable way of saying evolution.
