Portugal 10000 Reis
Description The Portugal 10000 Reis, featuring Luís I of Portugal, were produced by The Mint of Lisbon (Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda). These coins were produced between 1878-1889, which was a time of significant economic and political change within Portugal. The obverse of the coin features the side facing portrait of Luís I. Luís, also known as ‘The Popular’, reigned for twenty-eight years and was fitted to protect his country’s territories after his naval education. He did not excel in politics, however he was multilingual, he translated Shakespeare into Portuguese and was an amateur painter, poet and music composer. His passion was oceanology and he established one of the world’s first aquariums. The reverse of the coin features the crowned Portuguese Coat of Arms.
