Monaco 5 Francs (Rainier III)
Description The Monaco 5 Francs, featuring Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, were produced by The Paris Mint (Monnaie de Paris). Monaco’s coins are not produced by a Royal Mint of Monaco and instead produced by mints in other European countries. These 5 Francs were produced during 1960-1966. This coin is dated 1966 and is a proof version, the fields are deeply mirrored and the devices are heavily frosted for bold contrast on both sides of the coin. The obverse of the coin features the side facing portrait of Rainier III. Rainier ruled Monaco for almost 56 years and during his reign transformed Monaco’s economy, reverting away from the traditional casino and gambling base, to it’s current status of a cultural destination and tax haven. He controversially married American film star Grace Kelly and they had three children. Rainier died in April 2005. The reverse of the coin features the crowned shield of Monaco, supported by 2 monks armed with a sword. These coins are preowned.
