Katanga 5 Francs
Description Katanga 5 Francs, dated 1961, were minted by Kings Norton Metal Company, Birmingham on behalf of Katanga. Katanga, an important mining area, is a historical region and former province in the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Following Congo’s independence in 1960, Katanga declared itself an independent state, under the leadership of Moïse Tshombe, where he served as president from 1960-1963. In 2015 it was split into four new provinces, Haut-Katanga, Haut-Lomami, Lualaba, and Tanganyika. The obverse of the coin features Bananas, a very important crop and staple food in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the inscription ‘Katanga’. The reverse of the coin features the Katanga Cross, value (5 Francs) and year of issue (1961). The Katanga cross is a cast, copper ingot, in the shape of a cross, which was once used as currency in everyday trading across Central Africa. These coins are preowned and have a limited mintage of 20,000. All of our gold coins are verified for authenticity by our experienced team.
