Italian 40 Lire
Description Italian 40 Lire gold coins were produced between 1807-1814, by the Milan Mint, Italy. The obverse of the coin features the bust of Napoleon. The Kingdom of Italy, was a kingdom in Northern Italy, that was under the control of Napoleon’s French Empire, this was ended with Napoleon’s defeat. Inscription surrounding Napoleon’s bust reads ‘NAPOLEONE IMPERATORE E RE’, which translates to ‘Napoleon, emperor and king’. There is an ‘M’ inscription, under the year of issue, for the engraver Luigi Manfredini. The reverse of the Italian 40 Lire coin features a crowned mantle, with a shield on an Eagle enclosed. The edge inscription reads ‘DIO PROTEGGE L’ITALIA’ which translates to ‘God protects Italy’.
