Description Following success in the Franco-German War in 1871, Deutsche Reich, a German Empire was founded. Gold coins from the German Empire (Deutsches Kaiserreich) were last minted over 100 years ago. Bavaria is a state in the southeast of Germany. King Ludwig II of Bavaria is portrayed on the obverse of the 10 Mark Gold coin. He is most famous for his work on the castle of Neuschwanstein. Ludwig supported Prussia in the Franco-Prussian war In 1869, rather than using Bavarian public funds, Ludwig used his personal fortune to begin construction of the palace for the intention of private residency. He died in 1886 and the palace was never completed, it was opened to the public shortly after. The reverse of the 10 Mark coin features an Eagle and Germany’s coat of arms.
