Egypt 20 Piastres
Description This coin is an Egypt 20 Piastres gold coin. In Egyptian culture, gold was very symbolic, as it was considered a gift from the Gods. The piastre was the Egyptian currency until 1834, it then switched over to the Egyptian pound, which was produced in silver and a bimetallic standard of gold. Sticking with a bimetallic standard, between 1837 and 1900, the 5, 10 & 20 piastre and 1 pound coins were struck. In 1900, gold and silver coins were slowly phased out, but reissues followed in 1916 and 1917. 20 and 50 Piastre coins were introduced throughout 1922-1923. King Faud I was the first king of Egypt (1922–36) following its independence from Great Britain. The obverse of the 20 Piastres features a right facing bust of King Faud I, the Arabic inscription reads ‘Fuad the First, King of Egypt’. The reverse of the coin features Arabic inscription stating the value, year (1923 1341) and issuing country name. These coins are preowned.
