Description This Egypt 1 Pound was minted to commemorate the 23rd of July Revolution. On 23rd July 1952 the Egyptian Revolution began which led to the abdication of King Farouk I and the end of British influence in Egypt. The revolution was a result of discontent with the monarchy, social inequalities and economic instability. The revolutionaries took control of Cairo and seized government buildings and military bases. Anwar El-Sadat, the future president of Egypt, took to the radio to announce the success and declare an end to the misrule and corruption of the monarchy. Significant political and social changes were implemented. The reverse of the coin features an Ancient Egyptian war chariot with Pharaoh Ramses II, marking the revolution, along with Arabic inscription that translates to Revolution July 23 of 1952. The obverse of the coin features symbols of Ancient Egypt, vulture wings and cobra heads flanking the disk of the sun. The Arabic inscription translates to Republic of Egypt One Pound 1955 – 1374. This coin had two issue dates, 1374 (1955) which had a mintage of 16,000 and 1377 (1957) which had a mintage of 10,000.
